Up to 14% of U.S. community college students are homeless

USA Today, June 30, 2017

At the age of 35 and caring for her 9-year-old son, Mary Baxter found herself without a place to live last summer. Forced from her apartment because of unlivable conditions and her landlord facing foreclosure, Baxter knew she needed to go back to school.

Unable to afford the art schools she had been accepted to, like NYU and University of Chicago, she returned to Community College of Philadelphia in Fall 2016. Baxter wanted to further her education for a better job that would allow her to escape poverty.

“How can you feed yourself on $8 an hour with a kid and pay rent?” Baxter says. “There’s no way.”

(AL: In Russia, “$8 an hour” sounds like a very respectable salary. Not so in America! It is never reported in Russia, but prices for almost everything are much, much higher in the United States. See my series of posts “Dictatorship USA – A Plundering and Predatory Nation”.)

Baxter’s predicaments are not uncommon among community college students.

A new study found that thousands of community college students nationwide are homeless or on the verge of homelessness.

The study surveyed more than 30,000 students at 70 community colleges in 24 states. It found that 13-14% of students were homeless and about half were housing insecure, meaning they’ve missed rent payments or couch-surf from place to place. The survey also found that two-thirds of community college students are food insecure, meaning they lack the resources to properly feed themselves.

Another recent survey found 20% of  Los Angeles community college students are homeless and nearly two-thirds are food insecure. Past studies have found similarly high numbers when it comes to college homelessness across the country.

Baxter and her son currently sleep on her cousin’s couch while she works on finishing her degree. She’s five credits away from a behavioral health degree but continues to struggle with the cost, lacking a steady source of income.

If college prices were lower, if the minimum wage were higher and/or if colleges offered affordable housing and food options, this situation wouldn’t be so bad.

Although there seems to be a sudden interest in college homelessness from the community, the problem has always been there.

Pentagon’s secret chemical weapons tests on US troops secret

McClatchyNews, July 13, 2017

Details about Pentagon biological and chemical weapons tests involving military personnel during the 1960s and 1970s – some involving lethal nerve agents – have long been kept secret. Thursday, the House of Representatives agreed to keep things that way.

Supporters of his plan, which included the nation’s major veterans advocacy groups, said that disclosure would help victims get better access to medical care as well as government benefits.

Veterans groups are demanding to know exactly what happened during the Pentagon’s series of secret chemical and biological weapons tests involving military personnel in the 1960s and 1970s.

The tests involved nerve agents like Sarin and Vx, and bacteria such as E. Coli. Sarin and Vx are both lethal. According to defense department documents, death can occur within 10 to 15 minutes of exposure to a fatal dose of Vx.

Veterans say the tests have led to serious health issues and that they need answers so they can get proper treatment. Ken Wiseman, senior vice commander of the Virginia branch of Veterans of Foreign Wars, one of the nation’s largest veterans groups, said the time has long past for the Pentagon to provide details about the tests.

After information about the tests was first made public in 2000, the Department of Veterans Affairs commissioned two studies to look at the impact of the tests on veterans health.

One report noted the difficulty of studying the issue because many documents remained classified.

“These tests were an ugly part of our history. They put veteran lives at risk. And our veterans have every right to know what it was they were exposed to, how much they were exposed to, we need to think about their safety and their security,” one congressman noted. «Often, the impacts of toxic exposure don’t appear until long after service members have returned home from the battlefield and military records are filed away,» he said in a statement.

College in the U.S. Is More Expensive Than in Any Other Country in the World

Higher education costs in this country are out of control.

AlterNet, Sept. 16, 2017

The price of a college degree is more expensive in America than anywhere else in the world, according to a new report from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. The OECD looked at public and private college costs in its 35 member countries and found that higher education is priciest in the United States by a significant margin. One-third of countries do not charge tuition for public institutions and 10 countries have public tuition costs that average less than $4,000 annually But getting a diploma from a public institution in the U.S. generally runs about $8,202 a year. The closest competitor on that front is Chile, where public college costs average $7,654 annually.

Private college costs in America outpace those in other countries by a staggering rate. On average, attending a private college in the U.S. will set students—and their families—back by about $21,189. No other country even comes close in this regard.

Both public and private college tuition rates in the U.S. have increased at a rate higher than inflation, making higher education prohibitively expensive for a lot of American families. The cost of undergraduate education is 12 times higher than it was 35 years ago and the indexed price of college tuition and fees skyrocketed by more than 1,122 percent since 1978. As a result, students are forced to take on debts in the form of public and private loans to the tune of roughly $100 billion a year. The total cost of student debt now stands at $1.2 trillion.

Police to take more cash from American citizens

WashingtonPost, July 17, 2017

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Monday said he’d be issuing a new directive this week aimed at increasing police seizures of cash and property.

Sessions said in his prepared remarks for a speech to the National District Attorney’s Association in Minneapolis. «We plan to develop policies to increase forfeitures. No criminal should be allowed to keep the proceeds of their crime. Adoptive forfeitures are appropriate as is sharing with our partners.»

Asset forfeiture is a disputed practice that allows law enforcement officials to permanently take money and goods from individuals suspected of crime. In many cases, neither a criminal conviction nor even a criminal charge is necessary — under forfeiture laws in most states and at the federal level, mere suspicion of wrongdoing is enough to allow police to seize items permanently.

Additionally, many states allow law enforcement agencies to keep cash that they seize, creating what critics characterize as a profit motive. The practice is widespread: In 2014, federal law enforcement officers took more property from citizens than burglars did. State and local authorities seized untold millions more.

Since 2007, the Drug Enforcement Administration alone has taken more than $3 billion in cash from people not charged with any crime, according to the Justice Department’s Inspector General.

The practice is ripe for abuse. In one case in 2016, Oklahoma police seized $53,000 owned by a Christian band, an orphanage and a church after stopping a man on a highway for a broken taillight. A few years earlier, a Michigan drug task force raided the home of a self-described “soccer mom,” suspecting she was not in compliance with the state’s medical marijuana law. They proceeded to take “every belonging” from the family, including tools, a bicycle and her daughter’s birthday money.

Trump’s Coming War With Iran

Counterpunch, June 23, 2017

The Saudi war in Yemen is really directed at…Iran. Donald Trump’s first overseas visit to Saudi Arabia and Israel was specifically targeted at…Iran. The Saudi-led isolation of Qatar is actually about…Iran.

The escalation of U.S. military actions against the Syria government is… well, do I really need to spell this out any further?

Donald Trump has identified several number-one enemies to target. Throughout the campaign, he emphasized the importance of throwing the full weight of the Pentagon against the Islamic State. More recently, his secretary of defense, Jim Mattis, identified North Korea as “the most urgent and dangerous threat to peace and security.”

Other threats that have appeared at one time or another in the administration’s rotation include China and Cuba.

Through it all, however, Iran has loomed as the primary bogeyman of the Trump crowd. Fear of Iranian influence has prompted the administration to all but cancel the 2015 nuclear deal, intensify a number of proxy wars, consider pushing for regime change in Tehran, and even intervene in the battles between the Shia and Sunni variants of Islam.

The nuclear deal that Iran signed with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany and the European Union is hanging by a thread. Trump promised to tear it up. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has, albeit reluctantly, acknowledged that Iran has lived up to its side of the agreement.

Trump has directed the Treasury Department to apply additional sanctions on Iran’s missile program. He’s considering the option of declaring the Revolutionary Guards a terrorist organization. Congress, meanwhile, is pursuing its own complementary set of sanctions against Iran.

The conflict is escalating in Syria, where Iran backs the regime of Bashar al-Assad and the United States supports a shifting set of anti-regime groups.

For the first time since the war in Syria began, U.S. forces shot down a Syrian government plane this last weekend. It’s only the latest in a series of attacks on Assad’s forces. Three times in the last month, the U.S. military has come into direct conflict with the combined forces of the Assad regime, Iran-supported Shiite militias, Hezbollah, and possibly even Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps. The clashes have reportedly resulted in the deaths of a small number of pro-regime forces, and are much more strategically important than the U.S. air strike on the al-Shayrat airfield back in April.

The United States is maneuvering to control as much territory as possible in the vacuum created by the collapse of ISIS.

Meanwhile, over in Yemen, the Saudis are bogged down in a war of their own and producing a severe humanitarian crisis. The Trump administration has been mulling for several months a boost in U.S. participation in that war.

Now that the Navy SEALS have conducted two raids in Yemen under Trump — the most recent taking place last month — the prospect of more permanent boots on the ground may not be far off. Recall how the United States became involved in Vietnam to help out the failing French in order to prevent presumed Soviet expansion.

Rex Tillerson testified in front of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee: «Our policy towards Iran is to push back on this hegemony, contain their ability to develop obviously nuclear weapons, and to work toward support of those elements inside of Iran that would lead to a peaceful transition of that government.»

It was the first public indication of regime-change sentiment from the administration. Whenever oil interests (Tillerson) intersect with aggressive ambitions (Bannon), talk of regime change is sure to follow.

Back in 2013, Trump said, «We will end up going to war with Iran.»

Who knew that Donald Trump could be so prescient? The president has proven himself high-performing in at least this one regard: self-fulfilling prophecies.
