Socialism, Bureaucracy and the Market – 7

Why socialism was defeated…

The demise of the Soviet socialism and the Soviet Union itself powerfully demonstrates that socialism can never prosper when enemies of the socialist system are in power and control the ruling Communist Party. Enemies in the service of imperialism, principally US imperialism.

The USSR was destroyed basically because imperialism remained more powerful than socialism. Historically, this imperialist domination is a temporary phenomenum. Imperialist rulers have adopted a system in the advanced capitalist countries whereby the sharpest edges or crisis have ephemerally been blunted (a) by cheapening money (through essentially constant large-scale emission of new money); (b) through expanding and, by now, monstrous worldwide debt; and (c) ruthlessly exploiting most of the rest of the world. (See our series of posts on “Capitalism” for a more detailed explanation.)

This dominating phase of imperialist power is on the way out. It is impossible to endlessly cheapen money and incur debt. And much of the “Third World” is contesting the hegemony of the imperialist “masters” — in the financial-business-trade sphere and not only there. The inevitable eventual results will be the collapse of the capitalist monetary system and overwhelming, unpayable debt.

In addition to the historically temporary superiority of world capitalism, the massive destructions forced upon the new Soviet state were of considerable important. These devastations included the widespread imperialist intervention during the “Civil War” in Russia after the Bolsheviks took power and then the horrors of the Nazi-fascist invasion of the Soviet Union – an invasion that was the all the more vicious due to the enormous Western – principally American — build-up of the Nazi war machine, incitement to attack the USSR and massive US support of Nazi war production even during World War II itself (see my series of posts “Америка и Фашизм”). The nuclear-age Cold War forced upon the Soviet Union was also an important factor, as it diverted resources needed for developing the domestic economy.

The political results of capitalism’s relatively more powerful worldwide position was that imperialist rulers, in the United States of America in the first place, acting principally through their monstrous “intelligence” services found it rather easy to corrupt and control vital sectors of the socialist state. The problem was evident from the beginning:

«Our state apparatus is so deplorable, not to say wretched, that we must first think very carefully how to combat its defects, bearing in mind that these defects are rooted in the past, which, although it has been overthrown, has not yet been overcome, not yet reached the stage of a culture that has receded into the past.»

«The October revolution had overthrown the old order, ruthlessly suppressed and purged the Tsarist state; but in conditions of chronic economic and cultural backwardness, the elements of the old order were everywhere creeping back into positions of privilege and power in the measure that the revolutionary wave ebbed back with the defeats of the international revolution.» (Better Fewer, But Better, V.I.Lenin, 1923)

The Bolshevik Revolution – NOT universally popular…

The immensely important Russian revolution in 1917 was a genuinely popular revolution, supported overwhelmingly by the industrial working class, with mass support from the impoverished peasantry, inluding beleaguered, mainly peasant soldiers who were massively dying in the vicious World War I.

However, there was large-scale opposition to the Revolution as well. Skilled workers tended to support the class-collaborationist Menshiviks. And the bureaucracy and much of the intelligencia were counter-revolutionary.

These strategically placed elements in soviety served as the fertile medium in which imperialism could conduct mass subversive campaigns to eventually overthrow Soviet power.

In the 1920s and 1930s with the success of Soviet collectivization and industrialization, the counterrevolution in the main went “underground.” Iron-clad anti-communists – including those in the state secret services (NKVD, KGB) — became phony “communists,” As essential as it was, the anti-counter-revolutionary campaign in the 1930s could only deal with overtly anti-socialist, pro-imperialist elements (trotskyites, Bukharin, etc.). And undoubtedly, innocent people were caught up in the net, as the state secret services were controlled by the imperialist countries, including Nazi Germany, but most importantly the USA.

It was NOT the intrinsic features of socialism, but its inside-outside subversion that led to the downfall of the USSR. Powerful imperialist-directed elements and outright opportunists gained essentially full control of the state economic apparatus, the government itself and the ruling Communist Party.

With the progressive deterioration of society, working people’s morale took a decided turn for the worse, as noted earlier:

It is crucial to understand the basic cause of the “failure” of socialism in the USSR (and several other nominally socialist countries): imperialist-directed subversion and corruption of the Soviet state!

At the same time, we have to answer the question of how to manage a future complex and vast socialist economy while necessarily excluding the brutal and anti-human forces of the “market” capitalist economy.

Правительство США жестоко нарушало мои права человека при проведении кампании террора, которая заставила меня покинуть свою родину и получить политическое убежище в СССР. См. книгу «Безмолвный террор — История политических гонений на семью в США» — «Silent Terror: One family’s history of political persecution in the United States» —
