B. World-wide plunder (3)
Formerly, Third World super-exploited countries were largely suppliers of raw materials for the imperialist world and dumping grounds for manufactured goods made in the US and other western countries. But over the past few decades, many Third World countries have become heavily industrialized.
«NICs are countries whose economies have not yet reached a developed country’s status but have, in a macroeconomic sense, outpaced their developing counterparts. Another characterization of NICs is that of countries undergoing rapid economic growth (usually export-oriented). Incipient or ongoing industrialization is an important indicator of an NIC. In many NICs, social upheaval can occur as primarily rural, or agricultural, populations migrate to the cities, where the growth of manufacturing concerns and factories can draw many thousands of laborers.
«NICs usually share some other common features, including:
Strong political leaders.
- A switch from agricultural to industrial economies, especially in the manufacturing sector.
- An increasingly open-market economy, allowing free trade with other countries in the world.
- Large national corporations operating in several continents.
- Strong capital investment from foreign countries.
- Political leadership in their area of influence.
- Rapid growth of urban centers and population.
«The term came into use around 1970, when the Four Asian Tigers of Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan rose to global prominence as NICs in the 1970s and 1980s, with exceptionally fast industrial growth since the 1960s…» (“Newly industrialized country,” Wikipedia)
It took considerable time for colonial and neo-colonial countries to achieve the status of “newly industrialized.” It was necessary to build the country’s infrastructure, provide for established sources of initial materials and establish reliable markets for the sale of the goods produced. With time, these conditions came into being.
But the main driving force for this gigantic Third World industrialization was CHEAP LABOR.
Imperialism supplies the “strong political leaders”. Economic and political “stability’ in the subservient countries have been achieved with CIA subversion and/or actual or threatened US military intervention.
This “newly industrialized country” process is irreversible. Donald Trump’s promise to bring millions of high-paying jobs back to America is simply crap. Why would a corporation producing computers leave Indonesia to come back to the US when Indonesian workers receive 1/76 the pay?? No preferential tax treatment for US corporations could surmount this differential.
The growing loss of high-paying jobs in the US…
The status of the American worker has been decisively affected. “In 1960, about one in four American workers had a job in manufacturing. Today fewer than one in 10 are employed in the sector, according to government data… Workers transitioned from the fields to the factories. Now they are moving from factories to service counters and health care centers. The fastest growing jobs in America now are nurses, personal care aides, cooks, waiters, retail salespersons and operations managers» (“U.S. has lost 5 million manufacturing jobs since 2000,” CNN Money, March 29, 2016).
“The vast preponderance of job openings these days consists of low-skill, hourly wage work with high turnover… The great schism inside the American labor force get wider. We are referring to the unprecedented divergence between the total number of high-paying manufacturing jobs, and minimum-wage food service and drinking places jobs” (ZeroHedge, Nov. 4, 2016).
For American workers and most of the US population, the NIC phenomenon has become a double-edged sword. On the one hand, many goods available to US consumers are cheaper – alleviating catastrophic mass poverty in America. On the other hand, the income of Americans takes a sustained and increasing hit through debilitating competition with low-paid foreign workers.
In fact the main thrust of the wave of “reforms” in the advanced capitalist world is to decrease the cost of labor power and make workers in the imperialist countries “competitive” with those in Third World countries. That is the purpose of increasing the retirement age, facilitating the firing of workers, decreasing worker protection, breaking whatever remains of trade unions, further debilitating Social Security and welfare in the US…
Third World poverty is already the lot of tens of millions of Americans. Unless and until there is socialist revolution in the country, the situation will become worse.
Правительство США жестоко нарушало мои права человека при проведении кампании террора, которая заставила меня покинуть свою родину и получить политическое убежище в СССР. См. книгу «Безмолвный террор — История политических гонений на семью в США» — «Silent Terror: One family’s history of political persecution in the United States» — http://arnoldlockshin.wordpress.com
